Carbon Dioxide Detector

A Carbon dioxide detector detects dangerous levels of carbon monoxide and alerts people to dangers so they can escape in time. CO is an invisible, odorless gas that can cause nausea, headaches and loss of consciousness in high concentrations. It is produced by the incomplete combustion of fuel in a furnace, space heater or car. A CO detector can save lives, but it must be properly installed and maintained to work effectively.

What is a carbon dioxide detector used for?

Home CO detectors are typically battery-operated, although some are AC-powered with a battery backup. They can be either standalone units or linked so that when one alarm goes off, it sets off all the detectors in a house. The devices can have a display, which shows the current carbon monoxide reading (in parts per million), as well as a peak reading from memory of the highest level detected over a set period of time. The display models tend to be more expensive than the non-display versions.

The most common type of CO detector uses an electrochemical sensor that consists of electrodes submerged in an electrically conductive solution called an electrolyte. When carbon monoxide enters the gas-permeable compartment, it lowers the electrodes’ resistance to the flow of electricity and causes a chemical reaction that changes the color of the indicator. Some CO detectors also have a metal oxide sensor that uses circuitry to gauge levels of the gas by measuring how much the material’s density decreases.

Detectors are available for use in a wide range of applications, including bottled water plants and laboratories that use carbon dioxide as part of their manufacturing process. They can be paired with an oxygen monitor to automatically start ventilation at OSHA’s TWA and PEL setpoints for personnel protection, as well as monitor ambient air quality in order to help ensure that equipment is operating safely.
